On higher-order-sectorization cellular arrays

Senglee Foo · 2014

Cellular network operators are constantly seeking ways to improve network capacity and coverage performances without resorting to use of additional costly frequency spectrum. One of the most effective methods is to reduce the azimuth beamwidth of the antennas by using multiple directional antennas in the azimuth direction, or higher order sectorization [1][2]. This method has recently been proven to work effectively, provided that the azimuth beam patterns are carefully designed to meet network criteria for optimum capacity and coverage performances. This paper discusses critical antenna parameters of six-sector arrays and its relationship to the beam coupling factor (BCF) [3]. It is proposed here that the BCF can be used as a determining figure-of-merit in the optimization process of the higher-order-sectorization arrays.
