VHSIC impact on signal processing architecture

The DOD's Very High Speed I n t e g r a t e d C i r c u i t s (VHSIC) program wi 11 p rov ide advanced microelect r o n i c s components f o r use i n f u t u r e m i l i t a r y data and s igna l process ing a p p l i c a t i o n s . Th is paper o u t l i n e s a comprehensive end-to-end systems approach aimed a t f u l l e x p l o i t a t i o n o f VHSIC technology. The approach w i l l r e s u l t i n a processor development/support environment which inc ludes modular hardware b u i l d i n g b locks and computerized development and suppor t a ids . Th is end-to-end system i s expected t o o f f e r s i g n i f i c a n t l y improved performance and cos t e f f e c t i v e n e s s f o r f u t u r e h igh performance m i l i t a r y s i g n a l processors. Th is paper w i l l focus on d e r i v a t i o n o r r a t i o n a l e f o r t h e ch ip lsystem a r c h i t e c t u r e , on s igna l processing a r c h i t e c t u r e s made poss ib le by the se lec ted approach, and on a p p l i c a t i o n s sof tware suppor t .
