Performance-Intensity Characteristics of Synthetic Sentences

Charles Speaks, James Jerger, Susan W. Jerger · Journal of Speech and Hearing Research · 1966

Performance-intensity (P-I) characteristics of synthetic-sentence message sets were defined by a crew of four experienced listeners. P-I functions were sigmoidal and relatively steep. The sound pressure level corresponding to 50% correct identification varied from approximately 16 to 20 dB, depending upon experimental conditions and characteristics of the message set. The strategies employed by listeners in the identification task are discussed.
