Conceptual database design for coal deposits exploration

Michael Kaiserloglou, Marinos Kavouras · International Journal of Surface Mining Reclamation and Environment · 1995

In geoscientific applications, there has been a great need for the development of: (a) advanced spatial representations and related tools, (b) spatial database design, (c) new visualization-interaction techniques, and (d) modeling of complex processes. This paper focuses on conceptual database design for spatial applications. The proposed design is based on an extended Entity-Relationship model. New spatial extensions with the introduction of geometric primitives and multiple representations of spatial entities are. supported by the proposed design. Due to a wide application interest, emphasis has been put on databases for coal deposits exploration. The principles of the design however, apply also to other deposit cases
