This paper covers lessons learned and methods developed by the STARS (Software Technology for Adaptable and Reliable Systems) Training Sectiox at Keesler AFB.We train all branches of the Department of Defense, with a current training load of over 800 students per year.Our curriculum consists of one and four day lectureonly courses for executives and managers.We also teach two, four, and six week hands-on programming courses.In this paper, we address the difficulties that we encountered teaching Ada to programmers whose primary experience has been in COBOL and FORTRAN.We also discuss several innovative teaching methods we developed to overcome these difficulties.use.
