Subject Coverage in General and Specialized Mathematics Journals

Gregg Sapp · The Serials Librarian · 1989

Mathematics literature is characterized by a great number of general subject journals, which publish in all areas of mathematics, and a relatively small number of specialty journals. This study compares the subject coverage of a core of general journals with that in specialty journals in six areas: algebra, combinatorics, differential equations, geometry, mathematical logic, and topology. In four of these sub-disciplines, the core general journals provided greater subject coverage than the specialty journals dedicated to the fields. Libraries not supporting strong research or curricular interests in these specialties can still develop collections that represent each subject area by subscribing to just the core general journals.
