A Black Box or a Comprehensive Model
D. A. S. Fraser · Technometrics · 1968
Most processes and experiments have internal sources of variation that can be identified and described. The classical model of statistics does not describe such internal variables; it describes only an output or response variable and can be likened to the black box of the electrical engineer. More comprehensive models can be defined that do describe internal sources of variation. These models provide more substantial forms of inference—classical probabilities describing unknowns. Simple examples are examined in detail. References are made for more complex examples.
