Identification of specific random auditory waveforms
Irwin W. Pollack · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1975
Can listeners identify specific high-frequency random waveforms, randomly selected from large pools of possible waveforms? If so, can such performance be enhanced by restricting the size of the pool? Yes, listeners can identify specific random waveforms. No, any limitation upon the pool results in either the same or in poorer performance. Since all random selections from the same pool have nearly identical long-term spectral characteristics, listeners must perform a short-term, or running, spectral analysis upon the signals.
