Interfaces of communication media and health and nutrition awareness in an Indian urban community

This paper forms the second part of the report on a questionnaire survey of 480 adults from households of employees residing in a government quarters complex in urban Hyderabad. The first part covered dietary and communication media aspects while this paper reports observations on health knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) as well as correlations between different study parameters. The overall awareness of the community regarding most health aspects appeared to be satisfactory. But in respect of health practices, e.g. periodic health care and use of available health facilities, scores were low. It was found that health practices were directly influenced by media availability and usage. The inter-relationships between communication media and the establishment of desirable practices in nutrition and health have been elucidated, highlighting the importance of media in raising healthlnutrition awareness.
