Digital Personal Environments (DPE) infrastructure is far from traditional end users' devices and its associated management is a big challenge for both Service Providers and Users. Due to the dynamic and heterogeneous nature of DPE, centralized management paradigms are no longer valid. This paper presents a new distributed paradigm that is based on Autonomic Communications principles and concepts to build self-managed environments. Semantic technologies are the cornerstone for the self-management paradigm. So as to effectively control DPEs, methods of governance must also be provided. Policies provide a high level language for users that can realize such governance. A proof of concept shows the feasibility of the new paradigmalthough some aspects need to be further developed, related for instance tothe lack of standardization and agreement in the industry.
