Comment on “fitting a circle to surveyed points at the base of a conical stockpile”

RD PARBERY, J. Fryer · Australian Surveyor · 1990

Clarke (1989) recently presented a paper to this journal on the fitting of a circle to surveyed points. This paper broaches a problem which has been discussed recently in the literature (Landau, 1987, Berman, 1989 and Thomas & Chan, 1989) of journals dealing with the applications of computer graphics. Particular problems of this nature relate to the automatic remote measuring of mass produced components in industrial processors. This superficially simple problem raises several interesting questions both with regard to the method of obtaining the best fit and determining the likely error propagation in the estimations of the radius and location of the centre.
