So you want to import a program

While most applications programs are locally produced for local use, computer center staffs find themselves spending an increasing amount of time importing programs and packages from other sources. In some way this may be viewed as a symbol of the maturity of computing, in that we are building on the work of others and allowing specialization in package development. Yet, because program sharing is still the exceptional case, it presents many problem areas. The purpose of this article is to identify the problem areas and suggest procedures to smooth the acquisition of programs from outside sources.
