Error-correcting capabilities of multilevel block codes: an upper bound

David Avrom Bell · Proceedings of the Institution of Electrical Engineers · 1973

An upper bound of the Hamming or sphere-packing type that can never be exceeded can be applied to multilevel codes. Examples are given for quaternary and decimal codes, both for whole-digit errors and for nearest-place errors. A single-error-correcting decimal code is constructed.
