New methods for contour following and reconstruction of binary images are proposed in which these fundamental processes are carried out on the same run format, the “PXY table.” As a preprocessing of the contour following, by examining the runs at the order of a raster scanning, the relationship of upper and lower connection between the runs is obtained. This preprocessing can realize the high-speed run following along contours. The reconstruction of an image from its contours is carried out by using the PXY table in which the position of each right-side pixel of the vertical contour is stored, and by sorting the table. The time cost of the proposed method is theoretically and practically proportional to the number of runs. The method has been studied experimentally by using the CCITT test images. The results show that the proposed method is simpler and faster than conventional methods in both contour following and reconstruction. © 1999 Scripta Technica, Syst Comp Jpn, 30(11): 1–11, 1999
