The Data Management Needs of Mathematical Programming Applications

Over the years, much has been written about mathematical programming (MP) optimization techniques, a few articles have addressed MP matrix description languages, but little has been written about the data management required to support MP. Data management is the highest cost component of significant MP applications. This paper describes the data management requirements of MP models and the techniques that commercial users have evolved for meeting these requirements. It is intended to provide a framework for the fourth generation matrix description languages that are beginning to appear.
