Correlation of the Audio Characteristics of Communication Systems with Measured Articulation Scores
Leo L. Beranek · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1946
Based on a procedure advanced by Steinberg and French, a method for calculating the ability of a communication system to transmit speech intelligibly has been devised. The method has been applied to the calculation of the performance of seventeen different communication systems for which articulation data are available. The results indicate that it is possible to estimate from physical data the performance of a system in an assumed ambient noise field, and to determine how to modify the characteristics of the system to achieve better results.
