Multi-Resolution Splining Using A Pyramid Image Representation

Edward H. Adelson, Peter J. Burt · Proceedings of SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering/Proceedings of SPIE · 1984

The same process is used in trick photography, for advertising and for special effects in film-making.
