Abstract The effect of limit cycles on an output signal is studied in an all‐pole secondorder digital filter when an input signal is sinusoidal. First, limit cycles and an output signal are evaluated theoretically in the regions where the operation in the digital filter is linear. Next, the distortion rate in a digital signal is defined. Using this value, we estimate the bit number of the amplitude of an input signal required to distinguish the output signal from the limit cycle. Moreover, we also estimate the necessary bit number of the amplitude of an input signal when the random rounding is employed as an elimination method of limit cycles.
