Comparison of findings from three different test methods on the violin

Carleen Maley Hutchins · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1982

Three different tests of a violin in playing condition are made in the 100- to 150-Hz range: (1) bridge drive to air pickup via a microphone one body length off the back (2) air drive to microphone pickup, both inside the box near the tail end; and (3) musician bowing the violin at a constant microphone distance with the strong fundamental resonance frequencies located via two sound level meters, one with a 5-Hz bandwidth filtered signal displayed on an oscilloscope. Results of the three tests are compared and their implications discussed.
