TESSA - the ESsex syntactic analyser

Michael Soul · ACM SIGART Bulletin · 1977

The program TESSA is a two-pass syntactic analyser based on the parser of Winograd's SHRDLU. We wanted to see how dependent the success of the parsing in SHRDLU was on the restriction of the subject matter. The implementation was based on the description in the book (Winograd 1972), with considerable reference to textbooks of grammar and other linguistic material. The program was then further modified and extended to analyse sentences in a corpus obtained from children's books.
