Image Data Compression By Contour Texture Modelling

Michel Kocher, M. Kunt · Proceedings of SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering/Proceedings of SPIE · 1983

An image coding technique, based on a simplified description of regions composing the image, is presented. Each region of the image is made of the maximum number of adjacent picture elements (pels) whose grey level evolution contains no sharp discontinuities. The pels within the regions provide the texture information whereas the region boundary points represent the contour information. Image coding is carried out by approximating the contour information and the texture information in each region. This is done by using different global analytical functions for each component. This adaptive image coding scheme leads to compression ratios greater than 50 to 1.1
