The First International Workshop on Implementing Automata (WIA) was held at the University of Western Ontario, August 29-31, 1996.This workshop was an opportunity for people from the academic, research and industrial communities to come together to discuss symbolic manipulation environments designed for experimenting with automata.Several such examples including FLAP, FADELA, AMORE, FireLite, Automate, Turing's World, FinITE, INR, and Grail had been developed independently.As a result of such tools described above and developed by researchers scattered around the globe, the Conference Co-Chairs, Derick Wood and Darrell Raymond, were instrumental in founding this workshop to bring these people together.The Program Committee Co-Chairs for WIA 96 were Darrell Raymond and Sheng Yu, the program committee consisted of
