The Need for an Industry Standard of Accuracy for Elementary-Function Programs

Cheryl Black, Robert Burton and Thomas H. Miller · ACM Transactions on Mathematical Software · 1984

Because the computer industry has no standard of accuracy for elementary mathematical function subroutine libraries, computer users have no basis for determining the rehability of function results. This paper describes the industry's current inaccuracy problem and suggests guidelines to be followed m setting such a standard.
