Abstract This paper describes RAINBOW, an integrated suite of programs for assisting in the specification and design of networks—electrical, logical or otherwise. Data input are primarily graphical and manual transcription of data for subsequent phases of the design analysis is virtually eliminated by the use of a uniform data base, generated at the time of input. The RAINBOW system depends heavily on the software support of a filing system with on‐line access; this is briefly described. A description of the internal structures used to model the data is given. The component programs of RAINBOW, in its present state of development, are listed and described. The paper concludes with some suggestions for improvements and extensions to the system.
