Analysis of prioritized handover MAC protocol for speech traffic on ATM infrared wireless LANs

Pavlos Theodorou · International Journal of Communication Systems · 2000

This paper investigates the performance of a handover priority-based medium access control (MAC) protocol to support voice services on asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) infrared (IR) indoor wireless LANs. The prioritized handover mechanism utilizes both the guard and the queuing scheme and its performance parameters such as new call blocking probability, average access delay, handover blocking probability, packet dropping probability, forced termination probability and throughput are evaluated. The information obtained from this study is used in link design to give numerical results of the performance of an ATM IR-LAN when variable bit rate (VBR) voice sources are served.
