Annual U.S. summaries of PH.D. production and employment in computer science

Orrin E. Taulbee · ACM SIGCSE Bulletin · 1986

In 1972 approximately 20 Ph.D.-granting departments in the Mid-west collaborated to plan and organize a conference which focused on research activities and computer science departments. This was the genesis of the annual computer science conferences with the first being held in Columbus, Ohio, in February 1973.The second was held in February 1974 in Detroit, Michigan. For each of these, NSF provided a grant for financial support and encouragement. This group of department chairmen did not wish to take upon themselves the responsibility of continuing to operate a major national conference with registration nearly as large as the Annual Fall ACM Conference. When the preparations for the 1974 Conference were well under way, ACM and this group of chairmen began negotiations so that ACM could take on the responsibility of holding these annual conferences as long as they served a useful purpose.
