A design for standard resistance coils

C R Barber, A Gridley, John A. Hall · Journal of Scientific Instruments · 1952

A new method for the construction of resistance coils specially suitable for use in bridge construction is described. A strain-free spiral of Minalpha (manganin) wire is supported in grooves cut in a Perspex disk and hermetically sealed in nitrogen between Perspex cover-plates. Full details of the methods used in the construction and of the heat-treatment of the wire in order to obtain good stability are given. Coils of 1000 Ω resistance have been made from about 42 m of 0.006 in wire contained in a disk of 7 in diameter and 0.2 in thickness: during the first few months after winding they have shown a rise of resistance of the order of 2 parts per million/month.
