SECTION 2: THE MALVERN SEMINAR: Towards Translation Equivalence from a Corpus Linguistics Perspective

Elena Tognini-Bonelli · International Journal of Lexicography · 1996

Certian assumptions inherent in the translation process are considered. The notion of a contextually-defined unit of meaning is then explored with particular relation to the concept of the linguistic co-text. Formal features in the co-text are inherently tractable and lead to the identification of the function of the unit. The same function in the Target Language (TL) will be associated with a different realization and co-text: the Translation Equivalent (TE). A corpus-driven computer methodology is employed to investigate certain examples from Italian and English and to build up a sample database of possible TEs.
