Research on Parallel Machine Architecture for Fifth-Generation Computer Systems

Murakami, Kakuta, Onai, Ito · Computer · 1985

The Institute for New Generation Computer Technology in Tokyo, known as the ICOT, has been conducting studies related to the development of fifth-generation computer systems since 1982. The FGCS project is concerned with the implementation of a prototype for new computer systems which are able to support and improve various activities of human intelligence, taking into account activities related to production. As these activities depend on human knowledge and human reasoning capabilities, questions arise regarding the approaches which can be used to endow computers with these human-specific powers. The major research problem of the FGCS project is concerned with these questions. Attention is given to the study of four mechanisms for the inference machine, and the development of a knowledge base machine. 23 references.
