The characteristics of ad hoc networks are more prone to physical security threats than the wired network environments. The presence of central certifying authority is a single point of failure. Therefore, it has become a primary concern of securing ad hoc networks. Authentication, integrity and confidentiality are important issues pertaining to network security. Traditional authentication schemes cannot be used in such type of network settings. In this paper a novel authentication scheme for authenticating public keys of participating nodes has been proposed. The scheme is certificate-less and uses Merkle tree to efficiently authenticate the public keys. Further it has been shown that dividing the entire network into different groups improves the performance of the proposed scheme.
