A new joint random access scheme is proposed to enable effectiveuplink access when users are partially aware of channel conditionsin multichannel wireless systems. The proposed scheme mitigatespacket collisions with joint backoff control in the time andfrequency domains, cooperating with a sensing method that exploitsthe channel conditions. The performance analysis of the joint accessscheme is facilitated by a Markov model that provides a closed-formthroughput expression. Simulation results show that this channelaccess scheme, working together with a simple sensing method, offerssignificant improvements to system throughput.
