ASSEMBLING CLOSED POLYGONS

Benjamin Shmutter, Yerach Doytsher · Survey Review · 1990

Defining polygons is an essential part of any digitising procedure. Analyzing various possible modes of defining polygons led to a conclusion that an efficient way to form polygons is to digitise segments of perimeters. Here, only a limited number of points is being digitised more than once, hence no excessive data are collected, and no external definition of parcels is required, thus eliminating the need for human assistance. The algorithm to concatenate segments digitised at random in order to form closed figures is based on the digitised segments only, without resorting to any additional information. The above features of the proposed method contribute to the automation of the process. It is worth noting that subdividing the area of the digitised map into closed figures by the proposed algorithm is unique, no formation of gaps or overlaps between figures takes place.
