Implementation of a file management system using a sigma 9 simulator
Mike Treat · 1977
The implementation of a file system to the TCP (Tiny Control Program) model was an ambitious but reasonable task undertaken by three) individual members of the CSS 662 (Advanced Operating Systems) class. These individuals were Earnie McNair, John Witman, and Mike Treat. As it turned out, however, the scope of such a project was too large for one individual to complete successfully in one quarter's time. In addition, the design specifications for each of the three people working separately on the project proved to be unacceptable for various reasons. Among the more significant factors were the problems of maintaining such a large program, the fact that none of the operating system code was reentrant, and the problem of scheduling file system routines as opposed to user jobs. Following the outline introduced by the class instructor, Mr. Jon Stewart, a completely new file system design was adopted with the individuals that worked on the file system project now combined in a joint effort.
