An ontology-based approach for modelling technical documentation towards ensuring asset optimisation

Andreas Koukias, Dražen Nadoveza, Dimitris Kiritsis · International Journal of Product Lifecycle Management · 2015

Ensuring the optimal performance of engineering assets is a crucial and challenging task that can be the foundation of success for any industry. This task is always greatly dependent on the official technical documentation created by the asset manufacturer and provided to the user describing in detail information concerning the asset. However, current technical documentations mainly consist of textual and graphical documents with information that is not fully and properly consumed by the users. As a result, the original documentation is not being put to effective use and the asset is not reaching its full potential. This paper proposes an ontology–based approach to represent the content of the asset technical documentation. The aim of the approach is to ensure that the asset is optimally managed according to the manufacturer's original instructions. An example scenario is presented that demonstrates the possible benefits using a rule–based model interpretation.
