The use of computer algebra in physics

T. Regge · European Journal of Physics · 1988

The history of computer algebra and the reasons for its current rise in popularity are outlined. It is postulated that when systems become user-friendly enough to allow widespread use, this will result in those institutions without access to big computers being severely disadvantaged. Incompatible languages and systems have already led to duplication of effort and will continue to do so. The EPS could assist the situation by ensuring that all member states have access to large facilities and by formulating a position on the issue of unified standards. Computer algebra systems that can run on personal computers should be developed and public money should be made available to pursue this standardisation of software and hardware.
