A Manuscript Databank for the History of Mathematics in Medieval and Renaissance Europe

Andreas Kühne · Primary Sources & Original Works · 1992

Of the one million Latin manuscripts which survive, about 5000 contain mathematical texts in Latin and European languages. With EDV they have been described in the International Computer Catalogue of Medival Scientific Manuscripts, called ICC MSMS, under direction of Professor Menso Folkerts at the University of Munich. Full descriptions rather than texts are entered in a PC-AT with 110 MB memory. The descriptions are based upon analyses already published or those prepared for internal use of the libraries. The encoding system was developed from current cataloguing standards and the Richtlinien zue Handschriftenkatalogisierung der DFG (1985) for very detailed information. Enquires to the ICC MSM data allows search of Location, Shelfmark, Date, Language, Author, Translator, Commentator, Scribe, Title, and Incipit. Among the first results has been discovery of further copies of known and of heretofore unknown mathematical texts.
