Ranking Approach for Search Engine Result Sets for a Semi-Automated Generation of Occurrences in Topic Maps
Bernd Markscheffel, Hendrik Thomas · Collnet Journal of Scientometrics and Information Management · 2008
Merino is a prototype that supports a semi-automated generation of occurrences using search engines. The prototype identifies relevant information resources by querying multiple search engines automatically based on knowledge stored in a given Topic Map. Merlino combines the retrieval power of search engines with the ability to express semantic relationships in Topic Maps. Various ranking mechanisms (e.g. search engine score, Web Impact Factor - WIF, Alexa Traffic Rank and Google PageRank™) are used in Merlino to facilitate users decision process for the relevance ranking of the resultset entries. First empirical studies are presented to show the impact of the ranking mechanisms on the relevance scoring.
