This paper reports on the ATOMVIEWplus ATM internet management system [1], which integrally manages networks in which an ATM network coexists with an existing LAN and the internet. Since ATM network management systems require features such as topology management and connection management that are peculiar to ATM and are not available in existing internet management protocols, ATM networks have hitherto been managed separately from the internet. ATOMVIEWplus makes it possible to manage integrated networks in which the internet coexists with ATM networks, regardless of the position of the management system, by allowing the ATM network to use the same SNMP [8] and IP addresses as those used in existing networks. To support the ATM-specific topology management functions, we propose a function for the automatic detection of physical topology using ILMI [14] and AToM-MIB [11], and a function for the automatic discovery and management of logical IP subnets simultaneously with the physical topology. We also propose a function for the remote/automatic setting of connections using the topology data thereby obtained, and a function for controlling the restoration of connections by automatically searching for alternative routes in the event of a network malfunction; we have implemented these functions in ATOMVIEWplus. © 1997 Scripta Technica, Inc.
