5.4.3 ANSI/IEEE 1471 and Systems Engineering
Mark W. Maier, David E. Emery, Rich Hilliard · INCOSE International Symposium · 2002
Abstract ANSI/IEEE Standard 1471–2000 is the Recommended Practice for Architectural Description of Software Intensive Systems, developed by the IEEE's Architecture Working Group (AWG) under the sponsorship of the Software Engineering Standards Committee of IEEE. ANSI/IEEE 1471 is the first formal standard addressing the content and organization of an architecture description document. As suggested by its title, ANSI/IEEE 1471 was conceived as a software standard, but applies essentially equally to broader systems. This article reviews the concepts of ANSI/IEEE 1471, the rationale for their selection, and their application to systems engineering.
