Quantum information tools

Klaus Mølmer · 2013

Summary form only given. Quantum information processing devices use superposition states to accomplish computing and other data processing tasks more efficiently and securely than allowed by classical strategies.Quantum computers have to be constructed as physical systems in laboratories, and numerous candidate systems are under current experimental investigation: trapped ions, cold atoms, superconducting circuits, liquid and solid state spin ensembles, etc. Quantum bits are associated with two-level quantum degrees of freedom in these systems, where suitable addressing and interaction permit control of individual bits, while interactions between systems are needed to accomplish two-bit gate operations. With a focus on the specific physical processes and interactions offered by different physical systems, the tutorial will present an overview of the basic ideas of quantum computing and a status of some of the more recent, innovative tools and ideas pursued in quantum information research.
