Great efforts have been made in the research on traffic control of ATM networks for multimedia traffic. Among the various multimedia applications using ATM, the transmission of encoded video streams is one of the most popular applications. This requires a broad bandwidth with low delay under conditions where the video traffic may be bursty. The development of effective video transmission methods is the key to achieving high performance networks. The existing video transmission methods are classified into two types: constant bit rate transmission (CBR) and variable bit rate transmission (VBR). VBR is more suitable for providing a constant quality with high bandwidth utilization. In VBR, cell discarding at the ATM switches may occur when burst traffic is transmitted, and traffic control is required to avoid quality degradation caused by cell discarding. One method of control for cell discarding is two-layer encoding. This method has a lower encoding efficiency because of the overhead of layering. We propose two methods for real-time encoded MPEG 2 video transmission over ATM networks where the source terminal dynamically control the transmission for each frame. The aim is the improvement of the quality by adjusting the transmission rate for each frame according to the available bandwidth using a fast bandwidth reservation protocol.
