FOUR DIMENSIONAL FERMIONIC STRING THEORIES AND SYMMETRIC ORBIFOLDS

Aspects of the connection between the free fermion formulation of four dimensional string theories and orbifolds are explored, and the ideas are illustrated by reference to simple models obtained by realizing the internal degrees of freedom of a bosonic string as free fermions.
