A Distributed Loudspeaker

Sipko L. Boersma · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1956

In ordinary loudspeakers for the audible range, the paper cone forms the matching device between driving mechanism and air load. It is well known that the cone cannot be designed without much trial and error, as movement at the higher frequencies is very complicated. The system described here behaves simply and is alternative to horn matching: traveling waves are set up in a structure. This structure presents to the driving mechanism a mechanical impedance that is designable, real, and constant over a wide frequency range.
