Recorded]Magnetic Tape For Information Interchange (800 CPI, NRZI)* ScopeTo provide a format and recording standard for a ½ inch, 9 track magnetic tape and reels to be used for information interchange among information processing systems, communication systems, and associated equipment utilizing the American Standard Code for Information Interchange, X3.4---1963 and amendments thereto.2. Tape Material.Tape to consist of a base material of polyester film (oriented polyethylene terephthalate film or equivalent) coated on one side with a durable yet flexible layer of ferromagnetic material dispersed in a suitable binder.2.2 Physical Dimensions.2.2.1 Tape Width 0.498 inch :t: 0.002 inch 2.2.2 Tape Thickness 0.0019 inch :J: 0.0003 inch 2.2.3 Base Material Thickness 0.00145 inch nominal 2.2.4 Coating Thickness 0.0006 inch maximum 2.2.5 Tape length 2500 feet maximum 2.3 Physical Requirements.Magnetic oxide surface to be free of raised areas, holes, or any foreign matter.Surface of base materiM to be free of powder or accumulation of deleterious matter which could cause incorrect operation or necessitate increased servicing of the tape transports.Tapes not to be spliced.Special leaders or trailers may be attached to the tape.* ASA Dodument X 3.2/325, Jan. 15, 1966
