METHODSthe quantity of protein present in the original macro method of Malloy and Evelyn. This violet colour led us to try an alkaline solution of phenolphthalein buffered to pH 10 as an artificial standard. This solution has a maximum absorption between 560 m,' and 500 my with a peak at 540 myA and was found to be stable at room temperature for a period of at least three months.Summary A rapid, simple and accurate method for the esti- mation of bilirubin in small quantities (0.1 ml. or less) of serum or plasma is described. The method is suitable for use in laboratories equipped with standard photoelectric instruments and has proved valuable, particularly in following the progress of erythro- blastotic infants. Thanks are due to Dr. E. M. Darmady for his help and encouragement.
