Adding breadth and interaction to computing classes

I teach an elective course in C++ and Object-Oriented Programming offered in the evenings at Tompkins Cortland Community College. Last semester I had a full class of adults, many with four-year degrees, who worked in the community in computer-related jobs. I wanted to include some material about how object-oriented systems were being used in the real world and what the current trends were. To that end, I tried, without success, to line up some outside speakers. I also wanted to have the students share some of their experiences and expertise with the class. I realized that many had not used the CD-Rom databases in our library, so I decided to combine a library update for the students with an assigned report which students had to share with the class.
