Some of the NCSU experience in data communications

Richard A. Usanis · ACM SIGUCCS Newsletter · 1981

The following is a summary of some of the past activities at North Carolina State University (NCSU) in data communications and related areas. The origin of these activities was in the late 70's. We are only now completing the first phase and beginning a second phase based on plans laid out then. Much has changed in the intervening years in terms of data communications and we are presently studying the effect newer technology has on our communications planning. So far our present system will allow us to merge with newer technology without loss. We will be able to take advantage of this technology as it becomes available in large quantities at reasonable prices. I mention these items because they lend understanding to why we are doing the things we are doing and the way we are doing them. Otherwise, some would be inexplicable, given the technology on the market today.
