Camera synchronization to imperceptible frames embedded in a displayed video sequence

This paper proposes an image acquisition system for mobile augmented reality (AR) applications. We assume such scenarios that a passing-by user points a camera-equipped mobile device toward a digital signage displaying an advertisement movie and gets augmenting information. The most common means for this situation is to include a visual marker such as a 2D barcode pattern in the display, but it may sometimes limit the contents design and spoil the view. Although displaying invisible markers with fast blinking light [Matsushita et al. 2003] is an attractive idea, it makes user devices expensive because a high-speed imager is needed. There exist digital watermarking technologies that can be used even when carrier images are taken by a camera [Nakamura et al. 2004], but it is difficult to reconstruct geometric relationship between the display and the camera from the watermark information.
