IT's megatrends: the security impact

Tim Ring · Network Security · 2013

The IT industry is notorious for hyping every innovation, with a 40-year track record of ‘Next Big Things’ that has indiscriminately praised winners and losers like the Atari PC and Apple Mac, Apple's Bandai Pippin and the Xbox, luggables and laptops, bulletin boards and Facebook. Four current IT ‘megatrends’ – business use of social media, mobility, cloud computing and big data – present a combined security threat that CISOs who consider the impact of each technology individually may miss. Collectively these trends accelerate the development of more corporate data and more endpoint devices, conspiring to worsen the most vulnerable area of corporate security. As a result, reports Tim Ring, CISOs may need to rethink their reliance on ‘best of breed’ security tools and settle instead for a simpler set of products.
