Comments on SMP
Richard J. Fateman · ACM SIGSAM Bulletin · 1985
Some time ago, a student here at UC Berkeley was interested in trying the pattern matching program in the computer algebra system, SMP. Before he could really get started, a letter from friends at another university, detailing a number of fairly astonishing bugs in SMP, arrived. After confirming that the bugs existed in the SMP (version 1.3.7, July 1984) system we were using at Lawrence Livermore National Lab, we felt that SMP had lost a fair amount of credibility, and we were hesitant to poke at it very much. Nevertheless it seemed important to bring to light some of the more striking observations so they could be fixed or explained.
